To help educators adopt student-centered teaching methods, Quezon City Academy hosted a professional development seminar titled "Go Beyond: Science Learning Design" on 19 May 2026.

The seminar brought together Junior and Senior High School science teachers to focus on transforming science lessons into inquiry-based, competency-driven experiences.

Shifting from Teaching Content to Designing Learning

The training challenged teachers to shift from instructional design to learning design. While instructional design focuses on how a teacher delivers content, learning design focuses on how students learn, creating a more flexible classroom environment.

Key topics and frameworks discussed included:

  • The Claim-Evidence-Reasoning (CER) Model: Helps students build strong scientific arguments.

  • Scientific Method vs. Engineering Design Process: Guides students from basic observations to creating real-world prototypes.

  • Hands-on STEM Challenges: Activities like designing bubble wands or model boats to encourage teamwork.

  • The Learn-Practice-Check (LPC) Framework: Ensures students master skills through structured tasks.

Expert Facilitation and Teacher Feedback

The seminar was led by Mr. Eduard Papa, a STEM faculty member from La Salle Green Hills who has spent over a decade training educators on technology integration and curriculum alignment. Participants gave the session excellent marks, praising Mr. Papa's organization and engaging delivery.

During the reflection period, teachers noted that the training showed them how to connect science lessons to real-life situations. While many cited limited class time and resource preparation as challenges, they plan to overcome these barriers through collaboration and low-cost inquiry activities.

Supporting Local Educators

To ensure the success of this approach, the academy's faculty highlighted the importance of continuous training and shared planning periods. This initiative was brought to Quezon City Academy through the partnership of Diwa Learning Systems Inc. and Bato Balani Foundation Inc., who remain dedicated to providing schools with practical classroom resources.
